SURGERIES
Williamson Surgery Center physicians perform a large number of elective and necessary outpatient surgical procedures each day. Following are some of the most common:

Orthopaedics
Arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder are frequent outpatient orthopaedic procedures preformed at Williamson Surgery Center. During arthroscopy, a surgeon inserts a small viewing instrument called an arthroscope into the joint through a small incision in the skin. The procedure often is performed to diagnose a joint problem, repair a joint, remove a loose object or monitor disease of the affected area.

Plastic Surgery
Breast augmentation is among the leading plastic surgery procedures performed at Williamson Surgery Center. The outpatient procedure increases the size of small breasts, corrects a size difference between breasts and helps reconstruct the breast following mastectomy.

Facelifts help patients—both male and female—achieve a younger, healthier appearance. The outpatient procedure can omit sagging, correct creases below the lower eyelids and between the nose and mouth, improve loss of muscle tone in the face and tighten loose skin.

Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits and improving body contours. The procedure is performed nearly anywhere fatty deposits are present including thighs, hips and buttocks, abdomen and waist, upper arms, chest, calves and ankles.

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is performed to improve the appearance and proportion of the nose, or to correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose.

Gastroenterology
Endoscopy often is performed to examine a patient's digestive tract or lower intestine. Using an endoscope, or flexible tube with an attached light and camera, doctors can obtain a clear view of the affected area as the scope passes through the mouth into the small intestine (upper endoscopy) or through the rectum into the large intestine (sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy), projecting the image onto a color television monitor.

Ear, Nose and Throat (Otolaryngology)
Insertion of ear tubes is performed frequently at Williamson Surgery Center, particularly among pediatric patients. The quick process involves placement of a small incision in the eardrum followed by the insertion of tubes that work to prevent fluid accumulation and improve hearing.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy commonly are performed to treat chronic, recurrent infections in the throat and ears. Tonsils and adenoids are cut or burned away, allowing the affected area to heal within one to two weeks.

Ophthalmology
Cataract surgery is a common outpatient procedure designed to remove a clouded lens (cataract), often replacing it with a new, artificial lens.

General Surgery
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive procedure designed to fix tears in the abdominal wall using small incisions, a mesh patch and special cameras to view inside the body.

PRE-SURGERY TESTING
All patients scheduled for surgery will receive a phone call from a pre-admission nurse three or four days prior to surgery and a medical history will be obtained to determine if pre-surgery testing is needed. Patients will need to provide a complete list of their medications (including vitamins and herbal supplements). If testing is necessary, patients will be directed as to where and when testing will be performed. If you have not received a call from WSC within 24 hours of your scheduled surgery, PLEASE contact us at 615.435.7968.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Preparing for Surgery

  • The night before surgery, have nothing to eat, drink or chew after midnight.
  • Gather your records (medication list, photo ID and insurance cards) to bring with you the day of surgery.
  • Leave all jewelry, money and other valuables at home or with your family.
  • Bring appropriate storage cases for personal items such as dentures, partial plates, contact lenses or prostheses, which you may be asked to remove before surgery. Items will be labeled and kept in a safe place until you are ready for discharge.
  • Arrange for someone to be with you during your stay at WSC and for 24 hours after your procedure.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. After receiving anesthesia, you cannot drive or take a cab or bus home. Your procedure will be canceled if no one is available to drive you home.

After Surgery

  • You will be transferred into a Recovery room for post-anesthesia care until you are ready for discharge.
  • During your stay in Recovery, pain medication will be provided as ordered by your physician, and you will be given something to drink.
  • You may progress gradually to a regular diet once you are at home.
  • In order to respect other patients' privacy, visitation will be limited to one family member per patient in the Recovery room.
  • Your physician or a nurse will provide after-surgery care instructions to both you and the individual who will be caring for you at home.
  • The Surgery Center will attempt to contact you within 48 hours after discharge to check on your condition and answer any questions regarding after-surgery care instructions.
  • If you experience any problems after you are home, call your physician or proceed to your local emergency room.
